Artist Statement : "Zoongide'ewin: She Begins a Journey" (2007) by Estrella Whetung (Nishnaabe & Lucbanin from the Mississaugas of Alderville First Nation) was painted as a graduation gift for the artist’s neechie (Cree friend) from Kawacatoose First Nation, Saskatchewan. The landscape, iskwew (woman) featured, and aesthetic is based on prairie photography and inspired by the masterful Plains Cree artistry of Allen Sapp from her friend’s homelands. It was a piece given to UVic to celebrate the opening of the First Peoples House and to honour the contributions of Indigenous students and alumni. The piece was also featured on the cover of Redwire magazine (Oct 2007; Volume 10, Issue 2).
